Nellie May Hornbeck Higgins Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Mrs. Nellie May Hornbeck Higgins, age 90, of Palestine, died Monday, June 6, 2022, at her home in Palestine. She had been in poor health for the past year and a half. Mrs. Higgins was born September 21, 1931, in Brinkley, Arkansas, and was the daughter of Clarence Preston Hornbeck and Maudie Maire Devasier Hornbeck. She lived in Palestine all of her life, was a retired secretary to the superintendent of Palestine High School, and was an active member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Palestine. She enjoyed many years of traveling with her family and friends. She was very active in her women's bowling league and her favorite past time was dancing at the Senior Citizen Centers. She was awarded the key to the City of Palestine for her life long support and dedication. Mrs. Higgins married Joe Lucas Higgins in 1948, and he preceded her in death in 1992. She is survived by three daughters; Daphne Jean Pike, and husband, Terry, and Doris June Shafer, and husband, Billy, all of Palestine, and Denelda Joyce Michaelis, and husband, Gary, of Goodwin, one sister, Francis Marie Middleton of St. Petersburg, Florida. She was a cherished grandmother of eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Deborah Jo Glover and one son-in-law, William Glover, four brothers; Clarence, Jimmy, Leslie, and Larry, and two sisters; Jean Hodges and Linda Shelton. Services for Mrs. Higgins will be held at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Palestine, 11:00 A.M. Friday. Visitation will be Thursday evening, 6:00 till 8:00 P.M., at Stevens Funeral Home, with Stevens Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the M.A.D.D.
